In recent years, we have been increasingly confronted with various types of misinformation that have been spread via the Internet and social networks. The aim of these practices is to reduce citizens' trust in democracy, state institutions and the media. In a recently presented report on extremism in the Czech Republic, the Ministry of the Interior warns that there is a large group of people expressing dissatisfaction with the current social order and the direction of the state. This group is strongly influenced by conspiracy theories and is an easily manipulated target for extremist and xenophobic politicians or for hybrid foreign power. These threats are a potential threat to the democratic foundations of the Czech Republic and should definitely not be ignored.
How can we counter these threats? What should the state do? And what can we do for democracy in this regard?
